CASE STUDY & TESTIMONIAL
TRADITIONAL STYLE KITCHEN
Coastal in Barnstaple
Sarah & Mike Baker
Moving from Bath, Sarah & Mike now live in an old farmhouse in Barnstaple, North Devon. Located up on a hill, the farmhouse which was built around 1850, has incredible views. In starting this project the couple knew they needed to ween themselves off of the green palette which they used excessively in their last house. They wanted to borrow from the views and open things up a bit more. In their last house, they had a very light kitchen with Corian worktops, some unique corner units, and a butcher's block and they were sure they wanted to carry some of those features over to the new kitchen as they had worked so well previously.

What We Did
The couple wanted to bring in some coastal elements to the design of their new kitchen to compliment the natural wood already in place. They wanted to make it lighter so they could include some bold colours. The colour scheme chosen incorporated the wood beams and the on-trend dark navy colour.
Rather than an island, a freestanding piece of furniture with a butcher's block on top was created so it didn't take up too much space but created a really nice workspace with the cooker and then the sink in the middle.
The curved units in the kitchen were something the couple borrowed from their last kitchen and was something Ashgrove were very very pleased to be able to create as a bespoke design for them. The curved units really maximise the space in the corners of the kitchen.
Sarah & Mike had already had experience with Corian worktops and they got on really well with it so this was an easy decision They loved the fact that with Corian there are no seams, no creases that you need to get clean. They like the lightness and the almost marble effect of Corian and that you can basically choose the style of finish that you want with Corian.
Whilst it is most common to have a breakfast bar as part of an island in the middle of the kitchen having the butcher’s block freestanding as well would have made the space crowded. As an alternative, we suggested the breakfast bar under the window to make the most of those views. The breakfast bar was finished with slate and also housed a clever little extra bit of storage underneath. This styling was complemented with curved shelving at the end of the cooker
The splashback was the couple's idea. As a big chunk of wall, they wondered if they could actually have something like an image there, something that brings a creative element, a graphics element to the kitchen. They found a company online that took their image and created the tiles in the right colour. It is something that people comment on.
Lasting Thoughts
"From the first point of contact with Ashgrove, everyone was very friendly and very accommodating, there were no pushy sales. When it came to the actual fitting of the kitchen the quality of their workmanship was second to none, real attention to detail.
Right from the start, you could tell that Ashgrove adheres to a high standard. There isn’t one aspect of the kitchen we are most pleased with – that may be a bit of a cliché – it is just really nice coming into our kitchen now – every bit of it is great. It is the one room of the house we actively want to keep clean despite having 2 children in the house! We love the splashback, the cooker, the color palate. andTte finished material on all the units, but really how it all works together. It’s a pleasure to be in the kitchen enjoying the view. We feel very lucky.
